Bankruptcy  

The members of this committee are interested in the interplay of real estate law with bankruptcy law and debtor/creditor law. The emphasis is on education, and the members participate in seminars, write articles for Michigan Real Property Review, and sponsor events that provide opportunities for networking and sharing of ideas.

Mission: The Children’s Law Section serves and protects the interests of attorneys, jurists, legal professionals, and the clients that they represent in child welfare, adoption, and juvenile justice proceedings.

Commercial Development, Ownership, & Finance  

This committee is focused on issues important to real estate developers and mortgage loan borrowers and strives to tackle the practical issues affecting developers, such as choice of entity, financing, due diligence, purchase agreement, title, economic incentive, and distressed real estate issues relative to developers and borrowers. The committee meets at least twice per year, and will host guest speakers to address issues important to attorneys in advising their developer clients. Committee will also be responsible for contributing to the Michigan Real Property Review, presenting seminars, and speaking at gatherings.

Commercial Leasing  

This committee is interested in commercial leasing and landlord/tenant law and discusses issues relating to office industrial and retail leases. The committee consists of sole practitioners, lawyers from law firms of all sizes, and in-house counsel of real estate developers and major retailers. The committee annually contributes at least one article to the Michigan Real Property Review as well as significant programs to both Homeward Bound and ICLE. Each fall and spring meeting is focused on at least one particular topic of current interest; past topics include insurance issues, SNDA agreements and estoppels, the res judicata effect of landlord/tenant court decisions, and the liability of landlords, tenants, and management companies for the criminal acts of others.

Condominiums, PUDs, & Cooperatives  

This committee's members represent developers, community associations, financial institutions, and title companies. The committee meets at least biannually and members are called on to lecture for the Real Property Law Section and ICLE presentations, as well as write an for the Michigan Real Property Review.

Construction  

The committee meets twice a year to discuss new developments in construction law as it relates to real property, including public, private, and residential projects, alternative dispute resolution, and the construction lien act. Our meetings usually feature a guest speaker on a current topic. Our members are regular contributors to the Michigan Real Property Review and also review and comment on proposed legislation affecting construction issues pertaining to real property.
