What We Do

The Legislative Committee reviews all pending legislation introduced in the Michigan Legislature, which has the potential to impact Michigan families, family law issues, access to justice and the practice of law in general. The Committee also may work with legislators to draft or improve proposed legislation. The Committee meets monthly and makes recommendations to the Family Law Council as to whether the Family Law Section should support, oppose or not take a position pending legislation.

How You Can Get Involved

The first step is to be a Family Law Section Member (you are not required to be a council member), then contact either person above.   We believe more great minds is best

When & How We Meet

The Legislative Committee meets via Zoom monthly at 4:30 pm on the Thursday preceding Family Law Council meetings.

News from Our Committee

Recently, the Legislative Committee has reviewed bills creating a child abuse offender database, and also has discussed the Uniform Premarital and Marital Agreements Act. Also, the Committee has recently reviewed bills seeking to amend the "Secret Marriage Act".
