FAA officials have predicted 2.5 million drones will be in use in the United States by the end of the year. By 2020 that number is expected to skyrocket to 7 million.

As drone use grows, the technology has the potential to impact many industries and many areas of the law. Aside from aviation law, drones raise legal issues in the areas of personal injury, property damage, real estate, and privacy. Lawyers are tasked with advising drone owners of their liability if something goes wrong and the rules by which they can legally operate. Criminal defense lawyers may be impacted as well as a bill is progressing through the Michigan legislature to set misdemeanor penalties for misuse of drones.
