This year’s conference will address implicit bias in the criminal justice system. Mark Fancher, staff attorney for the Racial Justice Project of the ACLU of Michigan, opens the program with a live keynote. Tufts University Professors Keith Maddox and Samuel Sommers follow with an interactive presentation on racial bias and stereotyping. Chantá Parker, Managing Director of Neighborhood Defender Service of Detroit, will present on the role of race and culture in building a criminal law office. Following a short break, Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit and Chief Assistant Victoria Burton-Harris will discuss their progressive social justice reforms. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and Conviction Integrity Unit Director Val Newman follow with their presentation on racial justice and conviction integrity. The National Black Prosecutors Association’s Vice-President of Legislative & Social Action, Bianca Forde, will discuss how we move from implicit bias to explicit empathy. Wayne County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Tim Baughman closes the program with his year-end review of high-impact cases.
