ADR Section: How Mediators Prepare for Mediation Teleseminar

The Section is pleased to invite you to attend this informative teleseminar which includes a panel discussion with advice and anecdotes from senior, experienced practitioners on best practices, techniques, common mistakes to avoid, and how to best prepare to mediate. In this teleseminar, Zena Zumeta and Earlene Baggett-Hayes will present: How Mediators Prepare for Mediation.

This will be directed to mediators and beneficial to advocates as well. This is the second in a series of three informative teleseminars on mediation and arbitration. Additional teleseminars will take place on March 7 and May 21.

Our Panel

Michael S. LeibOur Moderator: Michael S. Leib is a mediator with Leib ADR LLC in West Bloomfield, and devotes his time to the mediation of business disputes including bankruptcy disputes and participation on the ADR Section Council, as well as on the Debtor Creditor Committee of the Business Law Section. He has been an active participant in trial skills education, having written several articles and been a faculty member of ICLE Trial Skills workshops, Federal Bar Association presentations, and ABI workshops. Mr. Leib retired as a business trial lawyer in 2014 after many years as a shareholder at Maddin, Hauser, Roth & Heller, PC. His practice was divided between litigation in the bankruptcy court and business litigation in the state and federal courts. Mr. Leib has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America and SuperLawyers, and is AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell. He received his BA from Kalamazoo College, his MM from the University of Montana, and his JD from Wayne State University Law School.

Earlene Baggett-HayesEarlene Baggett-Hayes is an attorney who has focused on dispute resolution for over 20 years. She serves as a mediator, arbitrator, fact finder, and trainer. She serves as a neutral on numerous public and private panels across the nation, including the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, American Arbitration Association, National Mediation Board, and the Financial Industry Regulatory Association. Earlene has developed and facilitated over 20 training programs related to the area of ADR. She is licensed to practice law in the states of Michigan and Illinois. Her practice also includes work in criminal, domestic relations, probate, and property law. Earlene has been recognized nationally and locally for her work. She was recently inducted into the International Academy of Mediators. Earlene received the Distinguished Service Award from the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section in 2018. A native Chicagoan, Earlene is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where she received a JD degree and a BA degree in political science. She also received an MA degree in public administration from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Earlene is the founder and owner of the Law and Mediation Center in Pontiac.

Zena D. ZumetaInternationally known as both a mediator and trainer of mediators, Zena D. Zumeta is president of the Mediation Training & Consultation Institute, Zena Zumeta Mediation Services, and The Collaborative Workplace in Ann Arbor. She received her juris doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. Ms. Zumeta is a former board member and president of the Academy of Family Mediators (now merged into the Association for Conflict Resolution), past president of the Michigan Council for Family and Divorce Mediation, and past regional vice president of the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution. She is a past member of the editorial board of the American Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Magazine. She is a past president of the WLAM—Washtenaw Region. Ms. Zumeta has extensive experience as a trainer, mediator, facilitator, and consultant. She has been providing mediation services since 1981. She is an approved civil and family mediator in Michigan, and an approved mediation trainer for Michigan and many other states. She has taught at Hamline University School of Law, and is an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University School of Law’s Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, and Cooley Law School.
