As solo practitioners and small firm lawyers, a solid grasp of tax law basics can help you run your business and advise your clients better. This program brings together a professor, accountant, and two tax lawyers who will engage in a panel discussion of tax issues particularly relevant to solos and small firms including changes brought about by recent legislation.

Gregory_w.jpgGeorge W. Gregory practices law in Troy, Michigan concentrating on tax law, estate planning, business law, and probate. George is active in the Taxation Section and the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan. He has chaired many committees and projects and held all of the officer positions in both sections, and is the only lawyer to have done so. He has presented materials for various professional groups including the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, and many Estate Planning councils. He has written about tax-related topics in various publications including the Michigan Bar Journal, Michigan CPA, Michigan Probate and Estate Planning Journal, Michigan Tax Lawyer, Oakland County Bar Association Latches, and Journal of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners.

Mardini-Headshot_w.jpgRyan M. Mardini is a senior tax consultant within the Business Tax Services (BTS) Department of Deloitte Tax, LLP. By virtue of his involvement in a variety of tax engagement teams, Ryan handles strategic and complex federal, state and international tax issues across multiple jurisdictions. He further aids multinational clients in integrating tax planning corporate restructuring into their overall business strategy and complying with both U.S. and international regulatory requirements. As a senior consultant, Ryan handles corporate and tax matters across an array of tax services that include public SEC clients as well as private, closely held companies, including tax compliance, consulting, planning, and controversy. He also performs detailed technical review of partnership and corporate taxes while researching federal tax legislation.

Marineau, a licensed attorney in the states of Michigan and Pennsylvania, has over 20 years of experience providing international tax planning and structuring services to multinational companies. He has worked in both public accounting and law firms, as well as private industry. Most recently, he was a tax professor at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, where he continues to serve as a professor emeritus.



Dan_w.jpgDan Sheaffer served as corporate tax counsel for Alticor Corp., in Ada, Michigan, before joining the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School faculty. At Alticor, Professor Sheaffer had the lead role in tax planning and tax advice for Alticor’s Asian affiliates. Before joining Alticor, he was a senior adviser for Ernst & Young LLP, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, working on international tax issues for a broad range of clients. He also served as the only tax associate in a 50-person firm, Wishart Norris Henninger & Pittman, in Burlington, N.C. At Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, Professor Sheaffer teaches Sales and Taxation in the J.D. program. He teaches the Corporate Taxation, Income Taxation, and International Tax courses in the graduate tax program.
