International Law Section: Council Meeting & Program

This quarterly meeting features an extremely timely program:Trump This! International Trade and Immigration Under the New Administration. Joining us to speak about how the new administration may change trade policy are, from Washington D.C., Nick Coutsos, chief of staff of the American Automotive Policy Council, a Washington D.C.-based trade association that represents the common public policy interests of its member companies–FCA US LLC, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors Company. Prior to joining AAPC in 2014, Nick served as acting chief of staff and as associate administrator for Congressional and Legislative Affairs for the U.S. Small Business Administration. Before joining the Obama administration in 2009, Nick was Sen. John Kerry’s counsel on the U.S. Senate Small Business Committee.

Linda Armstrong and Bushra Malik from Butzel Long will address potential changes to immigration law under the Trump administration. Linda Armstrong concentrates her practice in the area of business and family immigration law, including all aspects involved with the international movement of personnel; immigration consequences of corporate restructuring, mergers and acquisitions; employer and workplace compliance issues, including I-9 and H-1B public access file investigations; inbound and outbound work-authorized immigrant and non-immigrant matters; and labor certification. She is a member of Butzel Long’s Global Automotive Industry Group. She provides onsite training to business clients on numerous topics, including U.S. non-immigrant visas; U.S. permanent resident processing; employer compliance issues, including I-9 completion and compliance and H-1B public access file compliance; and outbound general strategic planning. Ms. Armstrong is a frequent speaker on business immigration to professional and business organizations, including the International Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, SHRM, and Datatel Users Group.

Bushra Malik, who was named one ofDBusinessmagazine’s Top Lawyers in the field of immigration law, practices in the area of immigration law, focusing her practice on the representation of multinational and domestic clients' inbound and global migration needs. Ms. Malik's experience includes Employment based (extraordinary ability, outstanding researcher, multinational manager, and PERMs) and family based permanent residence petitions non-immigrant petitions (H-1B/Specialty Occupation, J-1/ Exchange Visitor, L-1/Intracompany Transfers, O-1/Extraordinary Ability, TN/ NAFTA); Employer Compliance (I-9 Audits and H-1B Public Access File Audits); J-1 waivers; Compliance under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiate (WHTI); U.S. passports; complex naturalization matters; and currency seizures. Ms. Malik has extensive experience in securing work and residence permits for numerous countries around the globe, including: China, India, Canada, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Malaysia, Hungary, Poland, Italy, and Belgium. Ms. Malik also routinely represents clients at U.S. Ports of Entry, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services District Office, U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad, as well as various foreign embassies and consulates. Prior to joining Butzel Long, Ms. Malik was a vice consul for the U.S. Foreign Service, Department of State in Seoul, South Korea. She also worked with the Executive Office of Immigration Review at the Chicago Immigration Court and had externships with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in New Delhi, India, and the legacy Immigration and Naturalization Service, Office of the General Counsel in Washington D.C.

Ms. Malik currently serves on the Executive Committee for the Michigan Chapter of AILA as the treasurer, and previously served on the Executive Committee for the Michigan Chapter of AILA as the secretary. Ms. Malik speaks Hindi, Japanese, and Urdu.
