When:  Sep 28, 2017 from 01:00 PM to 04:00 PM (ET)

This event is held in conjunction with the NEXT Conference.

Hot Issues in Michigan Water

Get up to speed on hot issues facing Michigan waters with an update on efforts to assess the risks of and alternatives to the Line 5 pipeline in the Mackinac Straits, and issues affecting aquaculture in the state.

Members of the Michigan Pipeline Safety Advisory Board (PSAB), Jennifer McKay and Craig Hupp, will present an update on studies commissioned by the State of Michigan to evaluate the risks of and alternatives to Enbridge’s Line 5 petroleum pipeline running through the Straits of Mackinac. Mr. Hupp and Ms. McKay are two of five members of PSAB, the governor-appointed body that provides expert input to the state on Enbridge Line 5’s future, who submitted a detailed critique of the draft alternatives analysis because it used flawed methodologies and lacked critical data and analyses. They will also report on actions taken by the PSAB with regard to the alternatives analysis report and related matters at the board's September meeting.

Oday Salim, executive director and managing attorney of the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center, will give an update on the permit challenge by Sierra Club and Anglers of the Au Sable to the proposed expansion of the Harrietta Hills Trout Farm along the Au Sable River. Other speakers will discuss the potential for aquaculture in the Great Lakes, in light of the attorney general's opinion and other recent developments.
