The Practice Management Resource Center (PMRC) has a lending library of print and digital books on a variety of topics to help attorneys with all phases of their practice. Print books, for which there is a fee, are shipped upon request and must be returned by mail in two weeks. Members can also download free e-books and audiobooks from an extensive online library which are automatically removed from the client's device when the lending period expires.

The categories of books available include:

  • Client development
  • Finances
  • Staffing
  • Marketing
  • Work/life balance
  • Opening or closing a practice
  • Practice tips
  • Careers

The following are examples from the print lending library:

Social Media as Evidence: Cases, Practice Pointers, & Techniques, by Joshua Briones & Ana Tagvoryan, explains how to use Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and other social media channels for impeaching witnesses and undermining a company's litigation position.

Science for Lawyers, by Eric Drogin, clearly discusses 13 applied scientific disciplines in jargon-free language specifically geared toward lawyers.

Curious about virtual offices? Read Virtual Law, by Benjamin Duranske, examines virtual world providers and users and makes predictions about the future of the current law.

The digital library, which includes audiobooks, is also wide ranging.

Listen to How to Become a Rainmaker: The Rules for Getting and Keeping Customers and Clients, by Jeffrey J. Fox, and discover how to grow your practice.

The Lawyer's Guide to Building Your Practice with Referrals, by Steven J. Shaer, will help you build relationships with referral sources, get and manage new referrals, develop networking skills, and transform acquaintances into clients.

Death of a Law Firm: Staying Strong in the Global Legal Market, by Jaap Bosman and Lisa Hakanson, argues that, for the first time in history, law firms are at a crossroads. Taking the wrong path could lead to collapse. However, the authors indicate that, with the right steps, it is possible to survive and be even stronger than before.

Want a break from the law? Try The Last Summer at Chelsea Beach by New York Times-bestselling author Pam Jenoff, who writes a tale of romance and adventure set in the summer of 1941.

To read digital books on your iPad, iPod, or Android devices, you must first download the OverDrive App to your device, which you can find on any OverDrive-powered site, the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Windows Market Place. Once downloaded, add the State Bar of Michigan library by clicking on the Add a Library button. You can also borrow on your computer, Nook, or Kindle. The instructions for installing OverDrive and borrowing books can be found on the PMRC lending library site.

If you prefer a physical book, complete a lending agreement form, send it to the SBM, and pay the $10 fee for up to two books. Your books will be sent via UPS one-day delivery.

The lending library is just one of the PMRC’s valuable resources for Michigan lawyers and legal staff. The PMRC is available to you in several ways:

Take advantage of all the PMRC has to offer. It is your resource for all things practice management.
