MCL 600.1035 now requires every domestic relations mediator to “make reasonable inquiry” to determine whether there is a history of coercion or violence between the parties in every domestic relations mediation. The law states that a reasonable inquiry includes using the Michigan Domestic Violence Screening Protocol. In addition, mediators
must continuously monitor for DV throughout the mediation.

Speakers
Lore A. Rogers is a staff attorney with the State of Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board. She has an extensive background providing direct services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as teaching and training on issues of intimate partner and sexual violence. She has served on SCAO working committees to revise and update both the domestic violence screening protocol for mediators and the training curriculum for mediators on use of the domestic violence screening protocol. She has partnered with Zena Zumeta to train mediators in Michigan and Ohio on the dynamics of domestic violence and use of effective screening in family law mediation.

Rebecca Shiemke is the family law attorney at the Michigan Poverty Law Program (MPLP). She is a current member and a past co-chair of the State Bar of Michigan Domestic Violence Committee, past chair of the State Bar of Michigan Family Law Section, and currently active in the Amicus Committee and the Domestic Violence Committee. She is a contributor to Michigan Family Law (ICLE 6th ed), the Michigan Family Law Journal, and has been a presenter for ICLE, the Michigan Judicial Institute, and the State Bar of Michigan on issues related to domestic violence and family law. Rebecca is a recipient of the State Bar Champion of Justice Award. Rebecca received her J.D. from Wayne State University.

Zena D. Zumeta is an approved trainer for domestic relations mediation, Domestic Violence Screening Protocol, and civil court mediation trainings through the Michigan State Court Administrative Office, and for domestic relations mediation training through AFM/ACR and many states. She is a former board member and president of the Academy of Family Mediators, past president of the Michigan Council for Family and Divorce Mediation, and past regional vice president of the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution. She is active with the Association for Conflict Resolution. Ms. Zumeta has extensive experience as a trainer, mediator, facilitator, and consultant. She has been providing mediation services since 1981.
